Game 1
After last week’s match we were ready for another tough one. Ducklington had some strong players that weren’t there last time. It was soon clear in we were in for a tight game. The first half was very close. With no George M in defence, we had a new defensive combination of Tom and Charlie. Harry was playing in left midfield with Will and Max, and captain Cameron up-front. Everybody worked hard with good passes from midfield. Harry had a few great shots that brought strong saves from the Ducklington goalie. In goal for Cumnor, Adam managed to save a fierce shot. As the half-ended Ducklington piled on pressure and had several corners but Cumnor’s defence was strong. It came to half time with score still 0-0.
In the second half Cumnor had the wind behind them. It was our turn to put on pressure with Tom running out from defence and Harry swapping positions with Cameron up-front. After some good passing, Will broke through on the edge of the box and shot powerfully deflecting off Ducklington players into the bottom left corner of the net. 1-0 to Cumnor. Minutes later three Ducklington players charged through on Cumnor’s goal. It was three on one. Adam managed to clear it. Seconds later the ball fell to Harry in their box and with his left foot he booted a beauty into the back of the net. Cumnor were pushing players forward. Tom, Max and Will making runs forward, Cameron controlling the left and Charlie strong in defence. Another minute later and Harry had the ball again in the box – another great shot, another goal. Three goals in five minutes. Ducklington came back. A shot hit the bar, there was confusion in the box and Tom reached down to pick it up, but he didn’t. The ref thought he did and gave a penalty. Ducklington shot. It hit Adam’s fingertips but went in. Final score 3-1 to Cumnor, phew what a relief!
The second game looked tough with Isaac and Edward away, but the good news was Lucy was back after her broken arm.. George D took the captain’s armband and control of defence. This too was an exciting game. The teams were evenly matched, but Cumnor were playing strongly. Guy and Lucy put in some great attacks. Georgia made some important tackles. Hugo was strong in midfield and Philip was tireless. He ran up and down the pitch, chasing down everything. Guy was playing out of his socks and half way through the first half his hard work paid off. He found himself clear and put a great shot past the Ducklington keeper. 1-0 to Cumnor. But Ducklington didn’t give up and managed to equalise. And it was 1-1 at half-time.
The second half was as tight as the first. George continued to defend strongly. And Philip ran from attack back to help him in defence. Guy was in goal this half with Adam in midfield and Lucy continuing to run at the Ducklington defence. Cumnor had a series of good attacks down the left that ended in corners but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Late in the second half Ducklington scored a second. Cumnor always looked like they could equalise but in the end it remained 2-1 to Ducklington. Another great game from all the Cumnor players.
