Aways vs Carterton (L 1-4)

Well done to the Blues for another massive step forward. When the Blues conceded two goals in the first 10 minutes it looked as though the game might go the same way as the home fixture when we conceded a double digit number of goals without ever challenging Carterton's goal mouth. But the Blues are now made of sterner stuff, and dug in deep to resist the onslaughts of the second best team in our league as they pushed forward believing this to be easy pickings. But they were to be surprised, and after a 10 minutes of pressure Cumnor held on and then started to fight back. Soon Cumnor were moving into Carterton's half of the pitch, and starting to create chances of their own. After 20 minutes, Guy's speculative shot from the edge of the area evaded Joel's outstretched foot, and the goal keepers hands and Cumnor were back in the game at 2-1. A lucky third goal by Carterton gave them a 3-1 lead at half time. In the second half, playing downhill, Cumnor challenged and played like a team that believed they could still win the match. A late rather unfortunate goal, when a long punt bounced over the goalie's head onto the crossbar, and then back off the goalie into the net, was the best Carterton could manage in the second half. A superb performance by the team against a well drilled and talented Carterton team. Well played everyone, and particularly to:

Kieran and Kier for working so hard up front to relieve the pressure on the defence

Charlie, Lewis and Guy for creating a defence which wasn't going to be beaten

Man of the match went to Ben for some great running with the ball, and some great tracking back.

Away vs Launton (L 2-4)

Another good performance by the Blues.

Having gone behind to an unfortunate first goal where play stood still for a while, until Launton were first to realise that the referee hadn't blow the whistle, and promptly kicked it into the goal.

After that Launton had the better share of possession but with Cumnor still creating the odd chance. However it was Launton who nicked a couple of goals, and the Blues were feeling hard done by at half time to be 3-0 down.

The second half got off to another bad start, and the Blues were 4-0 down.

After that it was mainly one way traffic from the Blues with Launton trying to play on the break. But Cumnor were rewarded for some good play with goals by Joel and James. Then with five minutes left Charlie's shot grazed the post.

Man of the match: Joel for a great shot.

Away vs Moreton (L 0-1)

A terrific performance by the Blues as they continue to take some very rapid strides forward.

Playing against a team, well placed in the top half of the league, Cumnor decided not to let league positions worry them too much. On a small pitch, the two sides battled to and fro in the middlefield with Cumnor giving as good as they got. Breaks came and went for both sides, until Moreton had a punt from the edge of the area which just evaded Joel's fingertips.

Five minutes later Charlie broke free on the wing, and ran the ball to the bye line. Faced with a wall of Moreton defenders, he pulled it back to Nathan L on the edge of the box. Nathan's shot just evaded the fingertips of the Moreton goalie, and Cumnor were back level, or so everyone except one person thought. As the referee marched back to the centrespot, and Cumnor lined up for the kickoff, the Moreton linesman signalled offside for another Cumnor player "interfering with play".

Cumnor continued to battle valiantly, and with chances on both sides the game could have swung either way.

However at the end the Blues just failed. However it is refreshing to be able to argue that "we were robbed".

Great performances by many. Man of the match to Nathan L for some great tackling in the first half, and great goalkeeping in the second.

Home vs Kingham All Blacks L 1-7

Conceding in the first minute wasn't a good way to start, but the Blues kept going and their new found self belief, stepped in. In the first half opportunities for Cumnor were rare, and they went in trailing 3-0.

However as the second half progressed Cumnor were getting more and more possession and begining to threaten the Kingham goal. After 15 minutes the All Blacks got another from a well headed corner, before Cumnor spurned 2 gilt edged chances. As Cumnor pushed forward a few gaps were left at the back, and Guy eventually got his goal.

Well played everybody, this was a good team we played and it was a closer match than the score suggests.

Home vs Launton Boys Athletic (L2-3)

Unfortunately Cumnor were down to 10 players before the game started, and it looked like being a long afternoon when Launton took the lead after 5 minutes. The Blues then played the first fifteen minutes virtually in their own penalty box, conceding two more goals, and the day looked ominous.

But the Blues showed some real resilience and when Kier broke forward in the 20th minute for Cumnor's first attack of the game, it seemed to inspire the team. From the rest of the half Cumnor gave as good as they got, and even though a man down were creating chances.

In the second half the match continued to ebb and flow with the Blues playing on the break and Launton having more pressure. But on the 50th minute, the ball bobbled loose on the edge of the box for Luka to put in a shot. Launton parried the ball into Charlie's path and Cumnor drew one back.

From that point on it was Cumnor who had the possession and Launton who played on the break, and in the 55th minute Guy's shot from the edge of the area when low into the corner of the net, and Cumnor were back in it.

The final 5 minutes belonged to Cumnor and chances came and went for a draw.

A fantastic performance by the Blues who played with real conviction in the second half. Man of the match might have gone to Faris who had a superb game for the second match in a row. However the smallest goalkeeper in the league (Joel) lifted the trophy for a really top class performance.

Other mentions go to the whole of the team:

Kier who troubled the Lauton defence all game, and will soon open his goal scoring account.
Guy for playing so well with a dodgy back.
Nathan for being strong and resolute at the heart of the defence.
Daniel for keeping the right winger of Launton at bay
Luka who is getting more and more involved in the games and for his shot leading to the first goal
Charlie f0r keeping going and not dropping his head
Lewis for his running and a few well placed passes
James for some really clever distribution and quite a lot of tackling

Home vs Highfield Junior Colts (L0-9)

Well played to Highfield who looked a different team to the one against whom we drew 0-0 earlier in the season.

Cumnor had a difficult first half, and went in trailing by five. The second half was better but a superb own goal by Charlie kept the score board ticking over. Never mind.

Home vs Highfield Juniors (L 0-6)

A good performance and another big step forward.

Cumnor were expecting a hard match (after all we did lose 15-0 in our last encounter), and the team had been highly incentivised with the offer of a lolly if they kept the score to under 10. This seemed sufficiently high reward to spur the Blues on.

With 3 absentees, it was a fairly new looking line up with Faris and George making only their second appearances in a Blue shirt, and after 5 minutes the Blues were 1-0 down to a great shot by the Highfield forward. After 10 minutes we were 2-0 down, but the Blues then started to fight back, and blocked all attempts on goal for the rest of the half.

In the second half Guy moved forward, and the Blues looked much more likely to score, but also to concede goals. Highfield got a soft penalty, put one away from a long range freekick, and had one out of the hands of the keeper, and the eventual score was 6-0. However the Blues had 3 or 4 opportunities at the other end, but the back of the net eluded them.

The man of the match was Nathan Lewis for putting in some hard work, and running tirelessly at the Highfield defence.

Special mentions go to: Joel for a fabulous debut in goal, George who looked very solid at left back, Luka for clever passing, Jadon for some really hard work,Faris who looked comfortable in his first outfield match, and Nathan T for continually reading the game and making some fine interceptions.

Home vs Freeland L 0-3

Probably the best performance by the Blues this season - even though the scoreline didn't work out for us.

The Blues set themselves up have a strong defence, and gave Daniel his first chance in midfield. The plan worked well, with Guy and Isaac eliminating any chances and Daniel playing well in midfield. Neither team managed to create many chances and the game was even at 0-0 when the half time whistle went.

The Blues swapped around the defences in the second half with Charlie and Lewis taking over from Guy and Isaac.

It looked a good decision as the defining moment of the game came. With the scores still level after 15 minutes, Freeland failed to clear the ball and a ball broke through for Guy to latch onto. One on one with the goalkeeper we all thought this was the moment, until...the linesmans flag went up. How? Guy had gone past the defender to get to the ball. It is possible (maybe even probable) somebody else was in an offside position somewhere, but nowhere near the ball and not interfering with play. Even the Freeland players didn't understand why the referree blew the whistle. The Freeland spectators looked embarressed.

Cumnor continued to battle but 10 minutes from time, Freeland put away a scrappy goal, and after that the Blues conceded two more as they tried to chase the game. Even though they came close to scoring with a free kick which would have made it interesting.

Well done to everyone, and especially Isaac for helping out and winning man of the match. I am not going to pick out any other players because the whole team deserved praise for the performance.

Home vs Witney Vikings 29th January W 5-3

The pitch was looking a bit suspect before the start, but the referee and managers decided in the end that it was all right, and the Blues were very grateful as they notched up their first win in a while.

Cumnor took an early lead when Guy lashed in a ball from the edge of the penalty area. After that the match was played largely in midfield with the ball bouncing off the hard ground and making the Blues normal silky passing game difficult. Unfortunately a bobble of the ball threw Kier as he went to clear it with plenty of time, and Witney drew level.

This seemed to spur the Blues on and with plenty of possession they were always looking the more likely to score. Tom put in a perfect cross for Charlie to bounce it off one of the defenders and into the goal, and the blues went in leading 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Cumnor played really well and had opportunity after opportunity to increase the lead, but even with 3 attackers on a lone goalkeeper, the third goal proved elusive. Eventualy the Witney keeper decided to kick the ball straight to Cumnor forwards from a goal kick and Tom converted to take a 3-1 lead.

At this point the manager relaxed...but it was too early with Witney pushing forward and getting a couple of goals from high punts into the Cumnor box.

This left a very nervious last 5 minutes until Charlie latched onto a cross from Cookie and took the Blues ahead. Cookie got his goal in the final minute to seal the match.

A fine victory with good performances by all of the team. Special mentions go to Tom (who other than having a great match was the only one prepared to head the ball!), Lewis (man of the match for a great performance on the right wing), and Cookie for some fine passing. Thanks also to Faris for his first performance in goal.

Things are looking good.

Home vs Brackley Athletic L 1-4

A good game played in a good spirit.

For the first 20 minutes the scores were level, before a handball in the penalty area gave away a penalty and goal. Followed in quick succession by a second.

However Cumnor dug in, and with Guy making some great breaks in midfield Cumnor eventually forced a penalty of their own. This penalty was better than some we have taken, in that it was on target, but sufficiently close to the goalkeeper for him to save it.

In the second half Cumnor broke through many times but were never able to finish off the ball. While the Brackley No:3 continually broke through the defence, and nobody on the Blues was able to keep pace with him.

However the Blues were rewarded with a well worked goal towards the end, with the second goal for Ben this season.

Well played everybody, there isn't much to be done before we convert these fixtures into wins.

Saturday 6th January Away vs Banbury Spencer (L 3-6)

An enjoyable game with some big positives, not least having a substitute!

The Blues started in a completely new formation for the new year with big Andy Carroll (Kier) up front, and Nathan T replacing Hugo in goal.

The match started well as after 10 minutes Charlie put in a cross only for the Banbury defender to put it into their own net under pressure from the Blues forwards. However 5 minutes later Banbury were awarded a free kick 10 yards outside the box, and their big defender came up to put it high into the goal.

The match was even, and very open. But after about 20 minutes came the first of many mix ups in the defence with the Blues almost unwilling to clear the ball out of their own penalty area, and watching while Banbury took the lead. While just before half time a great run from Kier resulted in the goalkeeper parrying the save and Guy slotting home.

Half time: 2-2

The second half followed a straightforward pattern, of Kier making bursts through the centre, and creating opportunities while the Blues gifted goals at the other end.

Kier seemed uncannily able to muscle his way past the opposition defence, and end up 1 on 1 with the keeper but the goal being ever elusive. If he had been able to net half of the opportunites we would have won by a good margin.

Meanwhile at the other end the Blues seemed to have an ability to create opportunities for the opposition in bizarre ways, and unwilling to clear the ball under pressure.

With 10 minutes to go and trailing 4-3 (Charlie getting a scrappy goal after one of Kier's great runs), the Blues pushed forward, and were caught out to seal their fate.

Man of the match: unanimously Kier.

Away vs Highfield Junior Colts D 0-0

A good and probably fair result.

The Blues decided to turn up with 13 this week, which made things a lot easier!

In the first half playing down a slight slope with the wind behind, Cumnor virtually camped out in the Highfield final third for the first fifteen minutes. The ball bounced around the penalty area a lot but obviously didn't fancy going in the goal. The midfield (Tom, Charlie, Lewis, Guy and Cookie) kept it tight and although it wasn't pretty, Highfield were very much on the receiving end.

As the half progressed, it became clear that Highfield had one or two quick forwards, and a couple of times they threatened to score from a break. However Edward and Nathan did a good job of closing them down.

In the second half it was harder, and the Blues were forced to play a more defensive game as the wind and pitch was against them. The game ebbed and flowed and could have been won by either side.

On the 45th minute Highfield were awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge by a Blues defender, and it looked like the deadlock would be broken. However Hugo made himself look big, and the penalty taker took fright, hitting the cross bar.

After that the Blues had two clear cut opportunities to win the game, falling to Guy and Tom. Tom's missed by a coat of paint and he was still rueing what might have been even when being dropped off back at home.

Well played to everybody especially to Joel, Jadon, Ben and Luka for doing some unfamiliar defensive work, and Nathan for his first match for the Blues.

Saturday 13th November Away to Highfield Juniors L 0-15

Another difficult day with only 10 players, and going down to 9 for last 10 minutes of the first half.

For the first 20 minutes Cumnor played well. The first goal was a bit lucky as a high clearance sailed over Hugo's head, but the Blues kept it together. Trailing by two goals, Cumnor created a chance in the Highfield box, and Charlie looked certain to score. But just as he was about to score a clumsy tackle robbed him of the ball. It might have been a penalty, it might not have been. But it was the turning point in the game.

Soon after we were down to 9 men, and went in trailing at half time 5-0.

There were some valiant performances by Kier and Lewis in the second half. Kier is making a strong case to be the Andy Carroll of the Blues. But in the last 10 minutes, I think we conceded 6 goals, which made the scoreline look very miserable.

6th November Home to Tower Hill Stars L 0-10

Well done to the team for keeping going. A three goal improvement on our last match against this team.

In the first 15 minutes Cumnor played well and kept the score to 1-0, however a short period of madness allowed Tower Hill to take a 5-0 going into half time.

In the second half Cumnor played well, and had chances to score, and it is credit to them that they kept going and didn't allow Tower Hill too many chances.

Next time it will be less.

Man of the match: Cookie for doing lots of good things.

Home vs Freeland Saturday 30th Octobre (L 2-7)

The Blues were again down to 10 men, and for the first half they played well. A good early goal by Freeland was quickly equalised by Charlie breaking through, and for a while the score remained at 1-1. Then a spate of goals left the Blues training by 4-1, before William snatched another before the break.

Although 4-2 down at half time the Blues were playing much of the game in Freeland's half, and it looked better than the score line reflected. However in the second half, a short period with Cumnor only able to playing with 9, sealed the game for Freeland, and the Blues began to look tired, and heads began to drop. It is tiring playing with only 10 men.

Nathan for a great display of never say die - don't break any more fingers
James, Joel, Lewis and Guy for keeping going.
Jadon who looks a better player each week.
Hugo for some excellent goalkeeping.

Away vs Witney Vikings 16th October L 3-4

It seems we play better with 10 men.

This was a close game between Witney Vikings 16 and our 10 players. Even with mystery player X who turned out for us today, the Blues were unable to muster a starting 11.

However the game was as close as the scoreline suggests, although at one point it looked as though it might not be!

Cumnor started brightly with a very make-shift back four looking composed in defence. For 20 minutes both sides had opportunities until Witney managed to open the scoring with a ball that Cumnor failed to clear from a corner. A similar mix up allowed the Vikings to score a second, and Cumnor went in at half time trailing by 2 although a fair score would have been 0-0.

In the second half we pushed the midfield forward a bit, and immediately conceded two more goals.

After 40 minutes the Blues were 4-0 down, and heads looked like dropping. However a great pass from X to Charlie, split the Vikings defence, and Charlie slotted away comfortably. This seemed to galvanise some self belief in Cumnor, and although the Vikings had further opportunities, Cumnor were having the greater share of the ball, and eventually X slotted away a second goal by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with a scuffed shot!

With 5 minutes to go, a loose ball from a throw fell free to Charlie in the penalty area, and seizing his opportunity Charlie took the score to 4-3.

The final few minutes were all Cumnor's and the game ended with a fantastic shot by Luka from outside the Witney box just skimming the crossbar.

Man of the match went to Charlie for two goals and a great performance. However particular mentions in dispatches for:

Luka/Jadon - who are begining to get the pace of the game, and look good in defence.
Kier for being Kier and looking every inch a great player
James for playing the most intelligent football.
Lewis for never stopping running.
Joel for having to put up with being in defence again.
Hugo for more marvellous saves.
Daniel for continuing his excellent run of form.
X for helping us out in our hour of need.

Home vs Carterton 9th October L 0-11

A one-sided match with the Blues being weakened by injuries and unavailability of players. Carterton played well and were quick to close down on the ball, and were rewarded with a large scoreline.

2nd October Away to Brackley Athletic (L 2-5)

Despite the scoreline, this was probably our best performance of the season.

The Blues were unfortunate to have only 10 players, and it looked at the start as though it could be a tough game. Over the course of the game the Blues played at times with only 9 and the opposition played at times with 12!

Cumnor conceded an early goal, before getting a grip on the match, and starting to show some attacking purpose. The makeshift back line began to look secure and Charlie, William,Guy and James started to test the Brackley defence. Brackley caught Cumnor on the break and an ominous 2-0 lead opened. However only minutes later, Cumnor broke free and Charlie put in a great cross for James to open his account.

Cumnor then had great pressure before William put Charlie in on goal. Unfortunately the Brackley defender made a last ditch lunge and in fairness it wasn't a penalty. However with Charlie limping off Cumnor where then down to 9 men for the remainder of the half, and Brackley got a couple more.

In the second half, Cumnor played the better football and had more chances, even with a tiring team. William got his second goal of the season, and other than their goal, Brackley's opportunities were limited.

I am sure with a full starting lineup, we can reverse the result the next time we play them.

Man of the match: Kier Etwell, who has come a long way in a very short time.

Saturday 25th September 2010 Home vs Banbury Spencer W 2-1

Our season got off to a good start with a tightly contested match in which the Blues triumphed.

From the kick off Cumnor looked bright and were dominating the match. With the prodigal sons returning (Isaac and Edward were back), the side looked well balanced and an early corner gave the Blues the lead through Guy Pearce's knee. After that for the next 15 minutes Cumnor played in Banbury's half but were unable to convert any chances until William scored his first goal for the blues. Thanks to a great save by Hugo from a free kick a couple of inches outside the penalty area, we went into half time leading 2-0.

The second half rotations got a little confusing, and with Banbury switching tactics to put 2 strikers permenantly up front, it was a much closer contest with chances for both sides. However Cumnor forgot their shooting boots, and having gained a penalty, were still unable to break into a clear lead.

About 15 minutes from time, Banbury got one back, and the game was fairly nerve wracking for the final quarter. Again Cumnor couldn't find the back of the net, even when James put the ball into Charlie's path only 12 yards out with the goal keeper stranded. Guy made a couple of fantastic last ditch tackles, and Hugo pulled off the save of the match in the dying seconds, to earn player of the week.

Saturday 11th September Home vs Moreton Rangers L 1-4

The Blues are undergoing a little rebuilding at the start of this season - a few veteran players have moved on, and some can only be with us on the odd weekend. However the new members of the squad did themselves credit, and it was an enjoyable match for both sides.

In the first half the Blues took the lead with Ben Ffrench getting his first goal in a league match. The defence was looking solid, and Nathan and Keir seemed to be completely at ease even on the large pitch. Charlie came back from midfield to help out and the tactics seemed to be working with Moreton rarely able to challenge Hugo in goal. Joel hit the post and Cumnor looked good. However just before half time, a well worked move by Moreton allowed them to close the gap and keep the scores level at half time.

At the start of the second half, Lewis swapped with Charlie, and we came out expecting more of the same - unfortunately we immediately let in a goal and were then chasing the game. After that Moreton had a lot of pressure and deservedly landed a third. This seemed to rally the Blues, and Cumnor had another good spell of pressure. However most of the defence now decided that they should be playing up front and we conceded another just before time.

Well played to Ben who won man of the match for his first goal. Also well played to Daniel and Kier who were resolute in defence. Daniel particularly looks a much improved player over the summer break.

Friendly vs Highfield L 3-5

The first time out on the big pitch, and it looked like we might only have 4 players!

However as the kickoff approached our numbers swelled, and with the judicious loan of Fyn, Will, and Rory from the U10s we managed to field 11 players.

Highfield came 2nd in our league last season, and we were expecting them to be tough oppositions and likely to be near the top in our league this season. However Cumnor were not overawed and some good play on the right flank allowed the Blues to take the lead.

After that it was pretty much nip and tuck for the rest of the first half until Cumnor gave away two penalties as half time approached, both of which were converted by the Highfield No:10.

Cumnor continued to battle valiantly but a third goal looked as though it might put the match beyond us. However in the final 15 minutes, Fyn, Will, Charlie and Joel, linked up to score twice quickly in succession and bring the score level.

It was looking like being played out for a fair draw, but tired legs were leaving gaps and eventually a free kick about 10 yards outside the box, was slotted home by the big No:10. Cumnor tried to press forward, but were caught on the break and the score finished 5-3.

Charlie wanted me to point out that for the final two goals, we had one of their players as our goalie, as Ben had to leave, and that he would have saved both of them. Obviously his goal keeping skills are as fine as ever!

Not a bad result, but the transfer of Fyn, Will and Rory looks unlikely. So Lewis, Luka and Jadon have a lot to live up to.

New Season

Training

Training will start Tuesday (17th August) at the Closes at 6pm until 7pm. All training this season will be on Tuesdays between 6pm and 7pm, but we will be moving to Tilsley Park when the clocks go back in October.

Pre-season friendly

I have arranged a pre-season friendly against Highfield on Saturday 4th September at 10:15am.

League Matches

The league matches start on 11th September, and we are now playing in the C league with 12 other sides. We are playing 11-a-side, 30 minutes each way with all normal rules including off-side. The majority of our matches will be at 10:30am on Saturday mornings, but the occasional one may be at 10:15am or 11:30am.

Being in an offiside position

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:

he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:

he is in his own half of the field of play
he is level with the second last opponent
he is level with the last two opponents

Commiting an Offside Offence

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:

interfering with play
interfering with an opponent
gaining an advantage by being in that position

There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:

a goal kick
a throw-in
a corner kick

Tower Hill Tournament

The Blues finished their season on a high coming second in their group at the Tower Hill Tournament.

In the first match, playing a Tower Hill side (probably winnners division 1), the Blues played well and looked confident in their defence. A good move by Tower Hill allowed them to nick the only goal of the game.

In the second match, playing Bloxham who were promoted from the 3rd division to the 2nd division, Cumnor looked the better side. The Blues were unlucky to concede the first goal when a long range cross ended up in the back of the net. However Cumnor's constant pressure eventually allowed James to pick up a goal from a corner from what must have been a least a yard! However the best was yet to come, as the Blues put together what seemed like a string of 20 passes, before Charlie slotted the ball away from just outside the area. It was in some ways the goal of the season, not because of the finish, but because of the way the team all worked together.

In the last match, Moreton and Cumnor continued their close matches, with a 0-0 draw. Cumnor taking second spot from Moreton on goals scored.

Kennington Tournament 24th April 2010

The Blues had their first competitive football for a while at the Kennington Tournament, where Radley, Marston Saints, and the other Cumnor Minors were also competing.

The team fluctuated a little before the start of the match, as players dropped in and out, but the starting lineup was: Guy, Charlie, Isaac, Hugo, Joel, Ben, Edward and Kier.

The blues stuck to their task in the first match, and although they rarely challenged the Marston Saints goal they came away with a creditable 0-0 draw.

In the second match against the other Cumnor Minors side, Guy and Charlie decided that we needed to play a more attacking game and the Blues were able to play some of the game in the Cumnor half, although Adam was rarely challenged. At the end it looked like Cumnor might have nicked it, when a corner appeared to be converted by Harry, but only a blind man on a galloping horse would have missed the "hand of Harry", and the goal was correctly disallowed. Final result 0-0.

In the third game, the Blues took on mighty Radley who had beaten the other Cumnor side in their first match, and turned out the eventual winners. However the Blues were never over-awed and the match only remained 0-0 because the Blues spurned two great opportunities.

The 4th and 5th match were both lost by a single goal each, as the team decided that positions weren't really necessary.

However the Blues were back on form in the 6th game with another good 0-0 draw and a little more discipline.

In the last match of the day, the Blues got their just reward for some great football, and Charlie seized on a goalkeeping error to win the match 1-0 against Kennington.

Final result: W 1 D 4 L 2

A very creditable result.

Training

Training on Tuesday nights will continue at Tilsley until Tuesday 23th March. The clocks then go forward and we will train on Tuesdays at the Closes between 6 & 7 as normal. There will be no training in Easter week, 6th April. We are not intending to carry on training beyond the end of April.

Final match of the season

Our last match is against Launton on Saturday 13th March at 10am. The outcome of the match will decide who gets 3rd spot in the division, and it would be nice to get everyone there for the final match. I will take a team photo before the game, so come well laundered.

Summer tournaments

We are entering 4 summer tournaments which will run over the weekends between 24th April and 16th May. I will be going round asking who can play soon.

Presentation Night

This is on the bank holiday Monday 3rd May at the cricket club from 3pm onwards. Our team will probably be on around 5pm.

Oxford United Day Out

Martin and I will be taking anyone who wants to come to the Oxford United match on the 17th April. Tickets cost £4 for children and £16 for parents. However Martin and I can probably fit all the kids in our cars, so there is no need for parents to come. Let me know if you are interested.

End of season Party

This will probably be on Sunday 16th May, but this is to be confirmed. This year we will have to charge as we have no funds from the tea shop but it shouldn’t be very expensive.

Saturday 13th March Home vs Launton (L 2-8)

The Blues needed to win their last game of the season to finish 3rd, and it all started so well with Cumnor having all the pressure. The Blues were looking good passing the ball around, and Cumnor got a penalty and a 1-0 lead they deserved. However Launton immediately responded and a soft goal brought the tie level.

The game continued and Cumnor again spurned opportunity after opportunity, with Charlie having 3 clear chances, before Louie managed to add a second. Cumnor were still looking the better side at this point, and the defence looked solid, until 1 minute later when the lone Launton striker levelled the score again with a well taken, or soft, goal (depending on which side you were supporting).

Then just before half time, Cumnor conceded a free kick about 10 yards outside the box, and the Launton full back managed to find the top corner and Cumnor went into half time having had the better of the game but losing 3-2.

The second half is best forgotten. For 10 minutes it was still close, but when the 4th goal went in, Cumnor lost their shape, and the scoreline started to tick over, ending the season on a bit of a thumping which their earlier play hadn't deserved.

Saturday 13th Feb Home vs Freeland W 3-1

The gods have finally started to smile upon the Blues. Another close match ended with Cumnor running away with the match in the final ten minutes.

In the first half Cumnor had the better of the possession but were finding it difficult to create chances against the meanest defence in this league. Freeland were playing on the break and eventually found the back of the net with a well worked move.

For the second week running, the half time swap around worked wonders, and with Charlie dropping back into defence, Edward switching to midfield, and Louie playing the lone man up front, Cumnor started to create chances. The first goal came after about 5 minutes of the second half, with Edward playing a ball across for Louie to finish.

After that it was a nail biting 5-10 minutes where the game could have gone either way. However with legs tiring, Louie began to find space, and netted his second with about 5 minutes to go, and finally getting his hattrick in the 90th minute (well 40th actually).

A great game, and great performances from everyone in the team.

Man of the match for the second week in a row: Louie.

In the second game, with Louie and Isaac having to leave, we expected another close match. However a surge of confidence let Cumnor run away with an 8-0 victory (Joel 4, Ben 2, Charlie, Lewis). The manager will consider the new 5-0-1 formation.

Man of the match to Ben for his two goals. Joel will have to score 5 next week, and he can then have it.

I went up to look at the pitch this afternoon and it is playable. There is a potential for a frost, but the forecast is not for a heavy one, and we will be in the usual position that we won't know whether it is clear until we get up there at 10:30. So assume the match is on.

Home and away at the same time!

Cumnor played well in the first half, but some defensive lapses let Stonesfield take a 3-0 lead. Our usual half time switch had the effect of making Cumnor play much better, which was pleasant, and after 5 minutes of the first half Cumnor got one back with a goal by guy Pearce. After that as Cumnor pressed forward, further chances came and went, before Stonesfield started to exploit the growing gaps at the back, and it all ended up looking much worse than it actually was.

Saturday 30th January Away vs Moreton (L 1-2)

Having travelled 50 minutes to get to Moreton a little bit of frost wasn't going to get in our way, and both teams were eager to play even though it was still a little bit hard.

For the neutral spectator, it was an absorbing match. Moreton, having started the season poorly, have had a run of good results recently, and their position in the table belied their ability.

Cumnor started off brightly considering we hadn't played a league match since November, but it was Moreton who snatched an early goal with the Cumnor defences being caught square. After that Cumnor had a good spell of possession culminating with a good goal as Charlie cut in from the wing and running with the ball almost into the arms of the keeper, before picking out Joel for Joel to score his first goal in a league match.

In the second half, our usual half time switches, upset the balance of the team for about 10 minutes and Moreton had the better possession. But as the half wore on, it was Cumnor who had chances come and ago, with both Charlie and Guy having opportunities and Lewis hitting the cross bar.

Unfortunatley with 1 minute to go, Moreton broke free and after some gallant challenges and an almost save from Isaac the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Man of the match went to Joel for his first league goal, although Daniel was almost mentioned in dispatches for this first goal in the friendly match.

Saturday 28th November Home to Wroxton Youth (W 3-1)

A great game and a great festive time was had by both sides.

Cumnor in the first half had the vast majority of pressure and a goal from Guy settled the nerves. After that a great cross in from Charlie put the Wroxton defence under pressure and lead to a goal, which the dubious goals panel awared to Charlie as the last Cumnor player to have kicked the ball. Hugo was hardly troubled in goal, and when he was he was more than a match for the shots.

In the second half Cumnor continued to dominate, and chances for Charlie, Louie and Guy came and went. However Wroxton to their credit, started to play more expansively, and forced a corner. Maybe the manager needs to do a little work on corners, or maybe the team need to just be a little bit more aware, but the ball was virtually in the net, before the Blues realised that the corner had been taken, and Wroxton drew back to 2-1.

After than it could have gone either way with Cumnor looking a little uncomfortable. But with gaps appearing at the back of Wroxton, there was always going to be chances for Louie, and he duely obliged to finish the game.

The second match was an enthralling encounter ending 2-2 with the largest ever penalty competition ending 7-5 to Cumnor.

Our thanks to Wroxton who were sporting and played the game in a manner which does them credit.

21st November Away vs Ducklington (L 1-12)

Well played to everyone, and it was a tribute to the players that they kept going even when the scoreline had got beyond them. Duckington have beaten teams in the A league by similar scorelines and it was always going to be difficult to play the team second in that league.

Cumnor conceded a sloppy early goal which wasn't the best way to start the match, and after that had a period of 10 minutes where they held Ducklington reasonably well. However as the first half moved on Ducklington made their extra pressure pay and by half time the team were trailing by five goals. Funnily enough, Ducklington were not the most physical of teams we have played this seaon,although they were quick to close the team down, however it was their movement off the ball, and passing which was particularly impressive, and the Cumnor defence was frequently dragged all over the place even though we were playing 3 at the back.

In the second half Ducklington increased their lead, but it never turned into a rout, with Ducklington having to compete for the ball.

In the dieing minutes, Cumnor who had been playing more attackingly for the last part of the match, managed to grab a goal with Guy Pearce finishing off a ball which resolutely seemed not to actually want to go in the goal.

Well played to Edward who won man of the match for a second time, for displaying a complete disregard for the scoreline and tackling all and sundry at every opportunity.

Ignore the exit signposted to Ducklington off the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road, and head along the A415 towards Abingdon. Take the next left turn to Ducklington off the A415. The car park is 10 yards on your right. If you are coming the other way, you just need to make sure that you take the right turn into the centre of the village. If you can see the main church you are only a stone's throw away.

Saturday 14th November Away to Stonesfield (L 0-4)

A scoreline which possibly doesn't reflect the match, and a great tribute to the 7 available players!

In the first half with the slope and help of the wind, Cumnor playing 4-0-2 had the better of the game and were unlucky not to score on three or four occasions. Louie and Charlie linked together up front and had a number of clear cut opportunities. The defence looked strong and comfortable. One minor lapse of concentration allowed the Stonesfield striker to break through and convert what might have been their only chance of the half, and Cumnor went into half time feeling a bit miffed to be trailing.

In the second half, with the weather turning foul, the wind howling and Cumnor playing uphill, we were expecting to struggle. However the Blues kept their shape and Stonesfield were not finding chances easy to come by. Eventually a long range shot shot sneaked into the goal, but still the defences held out. Stonesfield started to dominate the match and Cumnor conceded two goals from corners where the ball seemed to be blown into the net.

As the game wore on, Cumnor started to push out again, and were rewarded wth a free kick which Louie curled into the top corner only to have it pushed away at the last moment by the keeper.

A great game, and our thanks to a sporting coach on the other side, who took his team down to six when a mistimed tackle meant Isaac had to leave the field of play for a bit.

The friendly was an interesting spectable, with horizontal rain, and Stonesfield players helping out as Cumnor players had to leave either to go home or get warm.

Saturday 7th November Home to Moreton Rangers (W 4-1)

Another fantastic match - but this time with the right result.

Cumnor started the match firing on all cylinders and spent most of the first 10 minutes battering the Moreton defences, leading ultimately to a scrappy goal which might have been an own goal, might have been Charlie's goal, but in the end the dubious goals panel gave it to Guy as the manager hasn't worked out how to record own goals on the match card.

However as the first half went on Moreton fought their way back into the match, and towards the end of the half it was looking very close. However gaps appeared at the back of the Moreton defence, and Louie, Guy and Charlie managed to create an excellent chance for Charlie to tap in.

After the last few matches, the management team were feeling a bit more relaxed as we went in at half time leading by two goals. However this was not to last long, as Moreton continued to play well and were having the better of the second half, when they were awarded a free kick for their No 6 to convert with a copy book shot into the top right which even Josephy couldn't save.

It was then quite close, and anxious for quite a long period where Moreton had a lot of pressure.

However with about 8 minutes to go, Louie did another of his magic runs, and converted for the third goal. After that Cumnor started to play more expansively and forced a corner, for Guy to convert spectacularly with a first time volley.

A great game and well played everyone.

Meanwhile...

The second game has proved an interesting place to try people out in new positions and this week it worked well, with Cumnor winning the match 2-1. Particular praise goes to Hugo who is playing well in goal, and is looking a good replacement for the departing Joseph. Joel added another to his tally, and Isaac is giving the management a bit of a reminder that he can score goals too. Well played to Daniel whose reading of the game is second to none.

Saturday 31st October Away to Launton (D 3-3)

Another fantastic match with some very big positives and a few things to be worked on.

Cumnor yet again started brightly, and were passing the ball around nicely at the start of the match. The continued pressure allowed Cumnor to eventually break the deadlock with Louie getting yet another to add to his account. After that, Cumnor continued to play well, and were finding opportunities easy to come by, but difficult to finish, while Launton had only fleeting sight of goal.

The half time re-shuffle bought immediate results, with Cumnor letting in two goals within the first few minutes of the half. However this week a major positive was the way the team kept their heads, and over the next 10 minutes, they worked hard to get back in the game, and eventually Louie got his second. With Cumnor still having the better of the game and only 3 minutes to go, Guy broke free, and a speculative shot ended up in the back of the net.

With only a minute to go it looked like Cumnor had snatched the game, but unfortunately cruel fate stepped in again, and a loose ball in the Cumnor box, eventually found the back of the net.

Man of the match was Charlie for some great skill and effort, strong challenges and good crosses. Special mention also goes to Daniel for his outstanding performance in the first half where he played the left back position with great skill and judgement. And of course Joel got a goal in the second match. Well done.

Home vs Highfield Junior Colts Saturday 17th October (L 1-3)

Mid-week international duty disrupted the game plan with a growing list of injuries to the team. Isaac still out with a broken wrist (get better soon) and Guy having a bout of 'man' flu, meant a little re-arranging in the team.

However Cumnor played well at the start of the game, and a piece of close interplay between Louie and Charlie, allowed Charlie to find the net, and Cumnor take a deserved lead, after about 10 minutes. After that the Highfield seemed to wake up, and started to create chances, while Cumnor dropped deeper and deeper. Still at half time, the team went off leading 1-0, and all was looking okay.

The second half Cumnor continued to drop deeper, and eventually the pressure paid off and Highfield levelled the scores after about 7 minutes of the second half. Cumnor still played deep and were punished twice again before Cumnor rallied in the last five minutes to try and level the scores.

Some good performances, particularly from our new found star goalie Hugo, who made some important and crucial saves.

In the second match, Cumnor played like a team possessed and won 3-1. A fabulous display of passing, and hard work, with Joel stretching Highfield's second team down the right wing.

Saturday 10th October Away vs Freeland (D 1-1)

A fantastic match where Cumnor were looking like nicking the match before Freeland equalised in the final minutes.

Both sides set up playing with 3 men at the back, and on a small pitch this made it very congested as anyone got near the goal. Chances were few and far between, and Hugo dealt with all his newly acquired duties in goal without any problems. In the first chance the only clear cut opportunity fell to Cumnor as Louie's cross just eluded Charlie. However the defense was holding together well, and Freeland were finding equally difficult to make opportunities.

In the second half, the match carried on in much the same way, until Joel picked up the ball on the edge of the penatly area, and hit a cracking shot onto the crossbar. It was a good enough shot to win the match on its own, and the rebound fell to Louie who had no difficulty from 3 yards in finding the back of the net.

After that the match carried on in much the same way, and with five minutes to go, Cumnor were looking good for a win. However Freeland kept battling, and the ball broke kindly for them and they took their chance to score the equaliser.

Man of the match went to Joseph for playing a great game and being very disciplined in defence.

Cumnor were slow out of the blocks, and having given away an early goal had to work hard to bring the scores level at 1-1 with a superb solo run by Louie. Even so, by half time Cumnor were getting into the game, and it was looking better albeit a little shakey at the back.

But the second half was to start badly with Cumnor managing to put the ball in their own net from a corner for the second time in the season. It was good to see the team smiling at this point.

As Cumnor pressed forward to find the equaliser, more and more gaps appeared at the back, and eventually we were made to pay with two goals where the goalie was left on his own.

In the friendly match, Cumnor played some very decent football. With a little more time on the ball, the midfield were getting their passes through, and Cumnor won 3-0. It was very promising.

Man of the match/day went to Edward for some great tackling, great dribbling and great passing.

Away vs Chipping Norton 19th September (W 3-2)

Cumnor were looking for revenge after a close match last week.

In the first half, Cumnor took an early lead. Louie putting the ball on a sixpence or rather Charlie's head, before it bounced off a stunned Charlie onto his chest and into the goal. Louie continued to put in some great corners and Cumnor were looking comfortable before Chipping broke free and levelled the score. With a few minutes in the first half, Cumnor were having the greater pressure and the ball bobbled loose for Charlie to get his second, and Cumnor went into half time leading 2-1.

With a few changes at half time, Cumnor continued to have the greater possession, and were comfortably seeing out the match, when Chipping put together a great move to level the scores. With 5 minutes to go, it could have been either side's game, but Chipping pressed forward, leaving Louie to break through and finish for a well deserved victory. Great praise must to to the team for never letting their heads go down, and Guy for covering vast amounts of space. Again newcomers Ben and Daniel showed great promise.

In the second game, Cumnor had a few difficulties in the first half, deciding to largely dispense with defenders and went 3-0 down. However in the second half they came back strongly with an outstanding performance by Daniel, who tackled fiercely and was continually looking to pass the ball around. For this performance and his performance in the first game, Daniel won player of the week. Well done, Daniel.

Cumnor started off the game looking lively and showing off their new passing skills. For the first 10 minutes the Blues dominated the game, and deservedly took a 1-0 lead with Lewis Watts placing the ball into the net for his first of the season.

However Chipping showed a lot of resilience and soon were putting the pressure back on Cumnor. Charlie S in goal made some important saves, but just before half time the Swifts pulled one back.

In the second half Cumnor looked tired, and as the game opened up it was the Chipping Norton midfield who were finding space, taking two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. After that Cumnor came back with shots against the post and crossbar, but were unable to find the net.

Great debut performances for: Daniel and Ben, and some impressive tackling and hard work by Isaac and Lewis. Isaac just pinching man of the match from under Lewis's nose.

With the return match next week, Cumnor will not have to wait long for revenge.

5th September Away to Wroxton (W 5-3)

It is probably too early to call this the game of the season, but it may yet turn out to be! Cumnor having gone down 0-3 in the first fifteen minutes, showed their strength of character to come back and win 5-3.

Wroxton are a good team. Early in the first half they were passing the ball around well, and scored a well earned first goal. After that the game was pretty close with both sides having chances and Joseph making some superb diving saves. However an unlucky deflection at a corner, and an unlucky penalty put Cumnor three goals behind. Chances for Cumnor came and went, but just before half time Louie took his first goal of the day, and things started to look up.

In the second half playing down the hill, with the (gentle) wind at their backs, the Blues started to dominate the game. Guy was searing through the midfield, Charlie down the left wing, and Isaac prowling dangerously around the midfield. It was not until about half way through the second half as Wroxton bought more and more players back, that Cumnor managed to squeeze the second goal with Guy opening his account. After that Wroxton seemed to decide that they couldn't just hang back, and the game was close again. It could all have been different as the Wroxton No:5 broke free but Joseph came off his line to make the crucial save.

With legs tiring (on both sides!), Louie started to exploit the open spaces, and within 5 minutes had dazzled his way past the Wroxton defence three times.

Well played everyone - it is a game to remember.

In the second friendly match, the team played well, showing good balance and effort. Well played to newcomers Daniel and Joel, and also returning Edward. The game was evenly balanced and one goal settled it in Wroxton's favour.

Finally our thanks to Wroxton for an excellent match, and friendly atmosphere. I suspect they will win a lot of matches this season, because they play good football.

End of season tournament is on Sunday 14th June. I am expecting everyone except George M to turn up at the Vine at 2pm (you can go direct, but let me know!). We will go to the bowling and then have tea at Frankie and Bennies and see you all back at the Vine around 6pm.

Every team member will be getting a team photo, there is a voluntary £3 contribution.

Cumnor Retain Radley Title

Cumnor ended the season on a high by winning the Radley tounament for a second time.

In the longest tournament ever, we got there at 9am and didn't finish until 6pm, it rained constantly through the day.

Cumnor fielded 7 of the 8 same players who won the tournament last season, and were helped out by Harry's school friend Grant. We also fielded a strong second team.

In the group stages the "A" team were looking down and out, when after 5 of their seven group games they had drawn 2 and lost 3, even though they had not struggled and had the better chances in all their matches. But a late rally, winning both their last matches, meant they squeezed into the knock-out stages of the cup on a head to head results tie break.

Meanwhile the "B" were storming ahead in their group. Eventually winning 4, drawing two and losing two, and coming a comfortable 3rd out of nine teams, and also qualifying for the knock-out stages. Congratulations to Louie for getting 4 goals, to Hugo for a great save, Charlie T for being everywhere, Joseph for being a brilliant player, Guy and Lewis for their middlefield work, and Matthew for some great trickery on the ball. In the quarter finals, the "B" team played a close match against Barton Rovers which could have gone either way, but eventually losing 2-0. It was a great effort from everyone.

The "A" breezed through the knockout stage never looking like losing a match, and winning the three matchs, 2-0, 2-0, 1-0. Well done Cumnor.

Radley Tournament 2009

Dear all,

As far as I am aware, the Radley tournament is still on, although there was been quite a bit of flooding out that way. Given that there is more rain predicted two things:

Have a look at http://www.radleyfc.co.uk before your leave tomorrow. I am sure they will put a notice on the site if things are not going ahead.
If anyone has a gazebo or large tent, then could you bring it along. My tent and Ian’s Gazebo, both gave up their respective ghosts at the Abingdon tournament, and it would be good to have a shelter of some kind.

Coming off the A34 follow sings for Abingdon Town Centre (A415). Straight across first roundabout, straight across second roundabout (Macdonalds on your left), you will come to a double mini roundabout. Turn right at second mini signposted Drayton. Take A40 North towards Cheltenham. Straight over the roundabout at Eynsham. About 3 miles on the A40 becomes a dual carriageway. Take the next exit signposted for Witney East & Cogges Farm Museum (B4022). Carry on down Oxford Hill through the traffic lights and into Witney. At the first mini roundabout turn left and then straightover the adjacent mini roundabout towards Witney town centre into Bridge Street. At the next roundabout turn right into Mill Street (A4095). Proceed up the hill and into Burford Road signposted for Minster Lovell. West Witney Sports Ground is approximateley 3/4 mile up Burford Road on the left hand side immediately after the junction with Deer Park Road.

Cup Final vs Ardington 24th April L 2-4

A great team effort was not enough for Cumnor to overcome Ardington in a closely contested final at Abingdon Town FC.

In the first match Cumnor defended well but a great flick header allowed Ardington to take the lead. Cumnor rallied and had some excellent pressure. Tom, who I hear is being scouted by Stoke City to replace Rory Delap in a few years, stretched the Ardington defence with throw after throw right into the centre of the box. Eventually the pressure paid off, and Ardington headed it passed their own keeper. The dubious goals panel gave the goal to Cameron. In the second half, Ardington and Cumnor battled with neither side really finding much fluidity. Ardington took the lead for a second time, but William soon broke free of the defenders to equalise the match.

At the half way stage Cumnor were looking comfortable, and when the referee asked me which end I wanted to take the penalties from, I sadly had to inform him that it was a two match fixture. In hindsight, maybe I should have taken the penalties.

In the second match, Cumnor played well again, but a good move by Ardington allowed them to take the lead. Cumnor strove to get back in the game, and chances came and went. As the match progressed Cumnor pushed more and more forward, and eventually paid for it with Ardington taking a fourth goal to effectively win the tie.

Great play by everybody, and the team should be proud of themselves.

Thanks for all the players, coaches and parents for a wonderful cup run. Maybe next year.

The Cup Final is at Abingdon Town Football Club. Directions are given below.

Please turn up at 10:30am (our kick off is 11:30am). Parking will be a nightmare and I doubt you will be able to park in the ground as the other final is first and the car parking will have been used up.

Please turn up in full kit, looking neat and smart, and we will take our team photo at about 10:45. If you are not there, then you will not be in it.

The football ground is easy to find. From the centre of Abingdon take the A415 out of town (signposted Dorchester). As you come over the bridge crossing the river, the ground is approximately 300 yards on the right.

For those of you with satellite navigation systems, the postcode is OX14 3HP.

Home vs Didcot 14th March W4-1

With Didcot still able to challenge for third spot in the table, Cumnor knew this was their last chance to secure their own destiny.

In the first match, Cumnor played well, having probably the better of the chances. However in an even match the single long range shot from Didcot's striker was enough to allow them to take the first game, 1-0. Adam had no chance with the goal, but maybe three or four first class saves to make him man of the match. Well done to all the defenders, especially Charlie T for their concentration and hard work.

In the second match, Cumnor looked the better side, and were hardly troubled at the back. Great running from Max and Harry cut into the Didcot defence, and Cumnor took all their chances well. Well done to Joseph for sporting such a ridiculous hair-do that the Didcot strikers really didn't want to go anywhere near our goal. George M won man of the match for some thumping headers out of defence.

3rd spot is now secured.

Cup Semi Final vs Abingdon 7th March W 4-2

Cumnor put in a polished and controlled performance to move into the final of the Oxford Mail Cup. They will play Ardington who narrowly overcame Cholsley in the thrilling second semi-final. The match will be played at Abingdon Town club on 25th April.

In the first game things were pretty tight for the first half with both sides having the odd chance. However as the game progressed it was Cumnor who were getting the better possession, and in the second half they started to dominate. Goals from Max and Harry, gave us a good lead going into the second game. Isaac won man of the match for his tackling and hard work.

In the second game, Cumnor came out looking to finish off the opposition, and two goals from William before half time, killed the game off. William's first goal ranks for goal of the season with a great long range shot from a difficult angle, and won him the covetted invisible man of the match trophy.

Cumnor lost their shape a little at the end, but the two late goals were never going to be enough to change the result. Or so I kept telling Ian...

Cumnor came out strongly and with a slightly new look back three managed to put some pressure on Kidlington. In the end it was pressure that paid off, with Cumnor converting three corners. The first an own goal, the second put away by George M sneaking around at the back post, and the third a terrific header by William. Man of the match went to Hugo for playing solidly in the middle of defence.

In the second game there were chances on both sides. The Kidlington striker looked very lively and at half time Matthew dropped back into defence to help out. This seem to work out and Cumnor saw out the tie. Man of the match to Matthew for snuffing out many chances at the back.

A strange game in which the team which took us so close last week struggled to reproduce that form.

In the first half of the first game, playing up a steep slope, the game was fairly even until Harry broke the deadlock with a fine backflick header from Guy's shot. After that it was one way traffic, and Cumnor were leading 3-0 by half time. Playing downhill in the second half Cumnor dominated the game, and Charlie T walked away with a hat trick and Cumnor were 8-0 in the lead.

In the second game, Cumnor played up the slope in the first half and Summertown Stars kept Cumnor at bay. However with the hill behind us, nothing could stop Max and he bagged a hat trick (4 in all). Louie played with his Brazilian flair again and got one more.

A great game, and our biggest win of the season.

Cutteslow Park has two car parks. The easiest one to use from Cumnor is the one off the A40 (ring road). For those of you who don't know the park, follow the (Northern) ring road towards Headington. You will go pass the Woodstock and Banbury roundabouts and hit the long open stretch. Just after the Banbury roundabout, there is a very small slip road/turn into the park. If you miss it, you have to go to the exit for the JR and come all the way back.

The pitch is a fair distance from the car park. Walk from the car park towards the ice cream shop, past the swings, and keep going, heading downhill whenever in doubt. The pitch is somewhere around there.

Home vs Summertown (Cup Quarter Final) Sunday 18th January W 9-7

Cumnor went through to the semi-finals of the cup competition, beating Summertown Stars in a heart stopping 9-7 quarter final.

In the first match, Cumnor fielded a strong side, and looked to make this pay dividends by racing to a 3-0 lead in the first half. They added three more in the second half but a couple of sloppy goals made the scoreline a little more respectable. Max got a hat-trick, Harry two, and Charlie T one absolute pearler.

In the second match, Cumnor played with zeal, and after an amazing weaving run through the Summertown defence gave Louie his first of two goals, Cumnor were looking comfortable. At half time with the score 2-2 in the second match, it was looking all done and dusted. However Summertown had other thoughts, and with Cumnor's defence creaking, pulled two goals back. The last ten minutes were exciting, but in the end Cumnor rode out the storm to go into the semi-finals.

Well done to everyone for a hard fought contest which kept the spectators warm and entralled all of us.

With only 13 players available, Cumnor looked as though it might be a tricky day taking on league leaders Horspath. But the team pulled together and it was a good performance which they can take credit in.

In the first match Cumnor played well to keep a strong Horspath team. Going one behind, they didn't let their heads dropped and were rewarded when Cameron but Charlie S through for his first goal in a competitive match this season. George M was on his best form making tackles and keeping the opposition at bay. In the end the 3-1 victory for Horspath did no justice to Cumnor.

In the second match Cumnor were forced to play with only 6 players as late sickness ravaged the squad. However all the players played their hearts out, and with a splendid performance by Adam in goal, Cumnor were unlucky to lose, especially after Tom's long range effort with tipped away by the Horspath keeper.

Away vs St Edmunds 29th November 2008 W4-3

Another close game with St Edmunds on a cold day.

In the first game, Cumnor played well dominating the possession but gave away a soft goal in the first half. After that it looked good for Cumnor when Matthew and William teamed up to score a well earned goal. With 1-1 looking a fair and likely result, Cumnor were unlucky to concede another soft goal which gave St Edmunds the edge. Man of the match to William for his goal and endless running.

In the second game Cumnor knew they had to chase the game, and they took their chances in the first half to bring the match back into Cumnor's favour. After that Cumnor dominated the game for a while and in the second half added a third goal. At this point it looked like a formality but St Edmunds kept their heads and played spiritedly and eventually were rewarded with a goal. This gave Cumnor an uncomfortable final five minutes to play, which they negotiated with only the odd nasty moment for the coaches and parents alike. Well played to Isaac who was man of the match for his sterling work in defence.

In the third game, Cumnor again looked good going forward and with William and Tom at the back took a 2-0 lead in at half time. Well done to Lewis for his first goal in Cumnor colours, and to Louie for another to add to his tally. In the end Cumnor won the match 2-1.
